The Color Fidget© is an interactive color wheel pin designed for artists, designers, and other creative types. It’s not just a fidget toy, it’s a take-anywhere guide for exploring and selecting harmonic color combinations. The design, by color theory educator Peter Donahue, is based on the idea that there’s so much more to harmony than complements, triads, and red-yellow-blue!

Key Features

– Vibrant color wheel fidget design with two interactive spinner layers
– Premium silver-plated finish
– 2” in diameter
– Double pin posts with durable black rubber backs. Secure your pin with our deluxe locking pin backs or magnetic locking pin backs
– Presented on a branded backing card

Key Features Expanded

A wheel of twenty hues
Based in color science: The traditional Color Wheel is based on a historic theory that red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors. It therefore usually includes twelve hues — three primaries, three secondaries, and six tertiaries. In contrast, the twenty hues of the Color Fidget are based on the perception-based systems, like the Munsell system, used by color scientists, realist painters and illustrators. More hues also means more nuanced color combinations to choose from!

Three levels of vividness
A new way to think about color harmony: Traditional color wheels display hue relationships — complementary, analogous, triadic, and so on. The research of Ellen Divers, Shigenobu Kobayashi, and others has shown that color palettes evoke an emotional response through their character, not through specific hue combinations. The Color Fidget therefore includes three levels of vividness, to show different characters of each hue.

Two rotating gamut masks
Traditional Color Wheels help you identify hue relationships, but they don’t effectively isolate sets of colors so you can judge how they look together. Limiting the range, or gamut, of available colors is a design method called gamut masking. By spinning the double mask design of the Color Fidget, you can visualize and explore combinations of hues with varying limits of vividness.

Large size
The Color Fidget’s two-inch diameter makes it a show-stopper! It also makes it large enough to clearly “read” different color combinations that show through the gamut masks.

Double pin posts with durable black rubber backs
Secure your pin with our deluxe locking pin backs or magnetic locking pin backs.

Please Note

The true colors of the pin may vary slightly. Not intended to replace educational color wheels.

The functionality of the pin's mechanisms is not guaranteed, and any variations in performance do not classify the pin as defective.

Just In Time arrival, too!

I've attached this pin to a canvas bag that I often take along when buying yarn. It arrived in time for me to take it to the Ann Arbor Fiber Expo and wow my friends with our ability to coordinate colors better. It is pretty and functional!

Really good, could use some improvement

First off, I absolutely love the idea, the concept, and like 90% of the execution. The comments I have that are in the detractor are purely minor things that make it not quite work as a fidget spinner specifically, but it still works exceptionally well as a functional color wheel.

The upper spinner works really well, But the bottom spinner is not very easy to spin in terms of fidgeting. It is also slightly difficult to move on its own, but still able to be done. I think this design would be improved if the metal discs were a little bit thicker so that it was easier to hold on to the base and spin the upper two portions. This would also help to keep the keychain from bumping into the fidgets. As it currently stands, the key ring or your fingers keep stopping it from spinning because the discs themselves are fairly thin. To clarify, they are not flimsy, just hard to hold. (I also have chunky fingers, so that could be a contributing factor)

The metal itself is pretty good quality, I have had this on my keychain for the last week and there hasn't been any wear or tear. (For context, I have two other keychain attachments that function as pry bars and knives respectively, so my keychains tend to die quickly if they aren't good) There hasn't been any scratching on the color enamel either.

Overall I really love the concept and I would absolutely buy this again especially if it was redesigned to work better as a fidget spinner instead of just a very well made color wheel.

Wonderful concept

Ordered the needle minder with the magnets. Took me a day of fiddling with it to get the disks to move freely. Then the next day one of the magnets broke in half. So I replaced both of the lose magnets on the back with a magnetic bar from a name tag. That worked a whole lot better.

Love My Color Fidget

I am having a difficult time differentiating between the outer blue/turquoise. Other than that, I enjoy learning color theory from Peter Donahue in his videos and it's a fun gadget.

Absolute delight

This thing is so cool that the first time I used it, the bird on the page flew away! Then when I went shopping there was a crying baby and I showed it to her and she instantly stopped crying!! She even thanked me afterward!! I left the store and there was a bear crossing the parking lot and he saw it and asked where he could get one! I want to tell the story of how it brokered world peace, but I figured that might be a little hard to believe.

But seriously, I'm overjoyed to get my pin. I've always struggled with color use and having this to reference is super handy.
